Our-Story

Our Story:

As a hair stylist and barber for 30 years, I have purchased countless pairs of professional barber shears I was not satisfied with. Either the quality was excellent but the price was out of sight or the price was reasonable, but the hair shears didn’t stay sharp, had poor balance and alignment and really didn’t cut well.  Something had to change. After a ton of research and testing, I discovered some interesting truths:

  • VG-10 Gold and Hitachi ATS 314 are unsurpassed for hair scissors
  • Hitachi 314 and VG-10 Gold combine vanadium and molybdenum to give the longest lasting sharpness with a measurably softer feel
  • Hand-forged, Japanese convex blades make for the finest, silkiest cut imaginable
  • Ergonomic handles are essential for reducing fatigue and avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Most professionals won’t buy shears they can’t return for a full refund or exchange

Using these standards, I have put together what I believe to be some of the finest quality shears in the business.  I branded them “Top Edge Shears” and I sell them to fellow professionals at wholesale prices. I am thrilled to be able to share these products with you.
Each professional haircutting shear we sell is personally inspected by me.  Here are the features I ideally look for in a shear.  From what some of you have told me – you’re looking for the same.

  • Hand-Forged VG-10 SuperSteel
  • Convex Edge, Hollow Ground Blades
  • Hand Sharpened
  • Ergonomic Handles Welded To Blades
  • Adjustable Tension System
  • Rockwell Hardness 59-61
  • Signature Travel Case
  • 30 Day, Money-Back Guarantee
  • Lifetime Workmanship Warranty
  • Free Shipping In U.S.
As we grow, we’ll add more products…always keeping with our concept of selling only the best, most popular shears for the best prices imaginable.  If there’s something you’d like us to carry, tell me.  I’ll do my best to help.

Mike's Story:

Meet Mike – Master Stylist, Working Barber, Founder of Top Edge Shears

Mike Witt

Hi. My name is Mike Witt, founder of Top Edge Shears, and this is my story.

Like just about every one of you, I started my career by going to barber school. My first job was in Roffler shops learning razor cutting and other techniques. With that as a base I took the next step and became a stylist.

I was one of the original stylists for Paul Mitchell Systems, working directly for Paul, and Jeanne Braa doing hair shows in the Midwest. The technical skills I learned from them really accelerated my career.

One of my top experiences was as a member of the Sebastian artistic team. I learned a new haircut every week for about two years and became an expert on new cutting, stripping and texturizing techniques that I then taught to others. I learned early that to do these procedures right you need very sharp, high-quality scissors.

Continuing my education on all facets of hair care, I worked for John Dellaria, Andis Clippers and Kenra doing cutting and styling demonstrations at trade shows across the country. Then, after getting married and starting a family, I opened my own shop and now, having to buy my own hair shears, I struggled to find the quality I needed at a price I could afford.

Over the last five to ten years, I’ve seen the quality of professional salon shears go down while the price goes up. I did a bunch of research to determine whether I could find a way to get very high quality scissors for a reasonable price.

Finally, I realized the only way to do this was to design and market my own shears. I talked to dozens of stylists, getting insights about what they like, what they need, and design elements they want in their shears.

More research led me to understand the elements that make a great scissor. Hand-forged, hand sharpened and hand-polished Japanese convex blades made of the best steel and topped off with a hand-welded, ergonomic handle with anatomically correct finger-holes.

I took the designs I created with the help of many of my stylist friends and went in search of someone who could help bring my dream to reality. It amazed me to learn that although there are about 14,000 scissor manufacturers in the world, only a very small minority (less than 1%) is capable of producing the top quality hair shears we designed. So I got to work.

I sourced the finest materials and found artisans who could craft the shears to my specifications. Then I started a company, named it Top Edge Shears and I now sell my stylist designed hair-cutting and thinning shears direct to hair professionals via my website, TopEdgeShears.com.

I invite you to take a look at our line and to contact me with any questions, suggestions or design ideas.
